The premium for micron is returning to more historical levels and, like last week, there were good premiums for style. Buyers looking for quality, particularly 15.0 to 18.0 micron are having to compete strongly. Even some of the buyers acting on behalf of Chinese interests are competing for the better wools. The general trend at the moment is upward for 18.0 micron and finer and slightly downward for 19.0 to 21.0 micron merino wools. Skirtings remain in strong demand in particular the finer microns and those with light fault (VM less than 3%). For growers who are shearing the coming months, it’s certainly in your interest to prepare your clip according to best practice. For Authentico certified wool, it’s essential that the wool is prepared to the code of practice and fully traceable through our own, European based, combing mills. This differs from RWS which is not a quality assurance scheme and unclassed or poorly prepared wool clips can still be RWS certified.

Forecast

We’re in the main period for best quality superfine wool and those spinners and weavers interested in these types should be buying now. We don’t expect the supply of these wools to last for long. We’re already seeing the mid break increase in much of the supply. A high mid break will lead to an unpredictable and higher variation in length which is less favorable for the weavers.
