AUSTRALIAN WEEKLY MARKET REPORT
Comment
The market opened cautiously following reports of limited interest from Chinese topmakers over the mid-year recess. However, after the opening, prices steadily improved over both days to finish at the highest point of the week. Topmakers initially started to buy and were followed by the larger trading companies. The better wools were much less affected. The Authentico index values are reflecting a better wool type, NM and certified. For 16.0 micron,17.0 micron and 18.0 micron they were only 0.6%, 1.2% and 0.2% down respectively for the week. This is much less than the average AWEX EMI (minus 3.8%) which focuses on a wider basket of types.

Forecast
Food for thought – reports are coming in regarding the reduced supply for the new season. The New England region, often regarded as a consistent supplier of the best fine wool, is expecting a reduced production by another 20% to 25% this year. Despite the better prices, traditional wool growers are continuing to move to alternative enterprises on farm to manage rising costs, particularly related to wool production. While the national production continues to move finer, it’s the limited supply of the better wools that will certainly be a concern for some.
