AUSTRALIAN WEEKLY MARKET REPORT

Comment

The market has stabilised around last week’s strong basis. This itself is a significant factor in determining the overall strength of the market, again driven by Chinese interests. Interestingly, nearly 7% of the total offering was passed in with some growers still optimistic for better market conditions to come. The fine wool selection was small this week. However, the small offering was heavily influenced by high quality certified clips, and these are still attracting very strong interest from Europe. The 15.0 and 16.0 micron Authentico index values are a reflection of this strength, even from limited supply. What was also noticeable this week was the premiums that buyers were willing to pay for the better wools. Whilst still being dominated by Chinese topmakers, the final customer could well be European based. This interest was most noticeable from 17.0 to 18.5 micron and focused on style, staple strength, vegetable matter and yield.

Forecast

We move back to the more tradition selling rotation next week and auction volumes are slightly down on the numbers from the current week. The selection from the largest wool growing state, NSW, is more notably drought affected as conditions continue to deteriorate as we head towards winter. Farmers are reducing stock numbers in these areas, and this will further impact on wool supply in the next season.
