The Cameron Family – from Ōtemātātā Station, New Zealand 🇳🇿

🔹 Their sheep farm

Nestled in the heart of the Waitaki Valley, Ōtemātātā Station has been home to generations of custodians who have cared for the land, the stock, and the stories woven through its hills.
Our family’s connection to this place runs deep — a legacy built on respect for the land and the responsibility to leave it better for those who follow.”
Here, the Cameron family has been farming since 1891, when Hugh Cameron purchased Aviemore Station. Over generations, the landholding expanded to include Otematata and Awakino Downs, forming what is today one of New Zealand’s most iconic merino properties.

Now under the sixth generation of family stewardship, led by Hugh and Joe Cameron, Ōtemātātā is home to 30,000 fine-wool Merino sheep and 500 Hereford cattle.

Sheep that thrive in the region’s dry climate and tussock-covered hills, hardy animals that produce fibre renowned for its softness, strength, and natural colour — every fleece tells a story of care and resilience.

🔹 What does it mean to be a grower in 2025?

“Being a grower and farmer in 2025 means more than simply producing wool; it’s about purpose, accountability, and adaptation. The world is increasingly aware of where its textiles come from and how they are made. For us, traceability, animal welfare, and environmental care are not new trends, they’re traditions. Through sustainable grazing, low-input systems, and commitment to natural fibre, proving that slow, honest farming still has a vital place in a fast-paced world. We see ourselves as custodians of both landscape and legacy — producing wool that is as authentic as the land it comes from. Our merino story continues to evolve, but its roots remain firmly planted in the high country hills we call home.”

An approach that blends traditional wisdom with forward-looking vision: sustainable high-country grazing, low-intervention animal care, and a focus on merino fibre excellence. Long-term commitments like wetland restoration and biodiversity initiatives reflect a deep-rooted sense of environmental care — values that lie at the heart of Authentico®.

🔹 What does it mean to be part of Authentico®?

Ōtemātātā Station joined the Authentico Integrity Scheme to formally recognise the values they’ve upheld for generations — custodianship of the land, care for our animals, and transparency in everything they produce.

“Authentico provides full traceability of our merino fibre from paddock to product, ensuring global buyers can confidently connect our high-country wool to its origin here in the Upper Waitaki Valley. It reinforces our commitment to sustainable, ethical farming and strengthens the story of New Zealand merino on the world stage.”
