Vicuña (Vicugna Vicugna):
Vicuña is the smallest and most timid of the South American Camelids. Today there are only 150.000 Vicuñas, 80% of which live in Peru. In the wild, they are found in groups of 6-8 females, under the cautious surveillance of a male. Considered the finest natural fibre in the world (12.5 mic.). In Inca society, only the Emperor wore clothes of Vicuña fabric. They used them once, after which they were offered as a precious gift. Today, Vicuña fibre, is available in very limited quantities, with rigorous preservation of the species, and all certified by CITES authorization. |
