Alpaca (Lama Pacos):
Within the four South American Camelids, Alpacas represent the largest number. The total population of Alpaca in South America is around 4 million, of which 85% live in Southern Peru. Alpacas are shorn once a year from November to March and have two breeds: Huacayo and Suri. The Huacayo is the most numerous, with nearly 90% of alpacas belonging to this type. It has a fine, soft and curly fleece, and a variety of more than 20 natural colours, from whites, creamy, light and dark browns, greys and natural black. The Suri type, slightly smaller, represents only 10% of the total, but with special characteristics such as a long, shiny and silky hair. |
